The tire's tread pattern and components were designed to optimize grip in the most extreme winter conditions. The front edge of the tread blocks features a sharp-edged, claw-like projection circled by siping, which pre-tightens and supports the stud. The sharp end of the square-shaped hard metal pin always points in the driving direction, ensuring excellent ice grip and lateral stability. The tread of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5, called quattrotread, features four different kinds of rubber compounds. The use of four different compounds improves driving stability and stud operation, and dampens tire noise.
